I get it now, music nerds

Hello Everyone,

I once heard it said that in his prime, Sidney Crosby wasn't limited by the team he was playing against, but by the team he was playing with. That he was far enough above everyome else, that the only limit to his performance was the degree to which his teammates could keep up.

I thought about this recently because I saw Feist in concert at Massey Hall in Toronto. I'd heard of Massey Hall but had never been. Apparently, it's got excellent acoustics. I'm not much of a music or sound geek, as you might gather from the sports metaphor I opened with, but I get it now.

When an amazing singer is in a venue that has amazing acoustics, it really does make a difference. And that's to my very uneducated ears. I get now why, to a true connoisseur, it is worth making a special pilgrimage to a place like that for this kind of event.

The entire evening was part of a wonderful birthday present, if not a pilgrimage in itself. Emilie planned it all out, but didn't tell me what we were up to. I wasn't even told we were going to a show until we rocked up to the venue. I also wasn't told who we were seeing, right up until my generation's Anne Murray walked up on stage.

Seeing a performer in her hometown was great as well, as there was a rapport with the crowd that couldn't exist in other places. Massey Hall was as good as advertised. A true gem. Big enough to have vaulting sound and impressive lights, but small enough to still seem intimate.

I'm never going to be a music geek, but I get it now. It was pretty cool.

Photos

I was pretty embarrassed to take this photo, as I didn't want to be the kind of tool who spends a concert with their phone out taking pictures. My embarrassment is not lessened by the fact that I took it to use in my blog.

So, other than memories, it is my only evidence from the night in question.
