Nova Scotia week seven: a walk in the park

Hello Everyone,

Anyone who knows me, knows that humility is one of my many great qualities. So, so humble. On Saturday, that humility was put to the test as I went surfing again, only by myself this time, and with much bigger waves.

I know I said that last week I rode some monsters, but that may have been a slight exaggeration. This time though, they were legit. They weren't well formed, instead they were kinda crumbly and not coming in at regular intervals or breaking cleanly. Still, they were taller than me, so there was a lot to work with. The challenge is that given the power in these bigger waves, there's no half way point to success. You either make it up and ride like a pro, or you get, as the French say, bouleverser.

My experience followed that pattern closely. I would catch a big wave, stand up and ride it right into the sand (thinking "Oh yeah, natural athlete, here we go."). Or I would misplace a foot or misjudge where I was on the board as the wave came in and I'd get put through the washing machine. (Thinking: "There's probably something wrong with my board.")

After about two hours in the cold North Atlantic, and a few mouths full of sea water, I packed it in. I was pretty happy, I caught some big waves and could appreciate the sport a bit better.

On Sunday, I understood why there weren't that many surfers out despite big waves the day before. They were all waiting for better conditions. It was sunny and the breaks were much cleaner. Emilie and I headed south past Liverpool for a hike and saw cars and vans parked on the side of the road next to spots where the waves came in. Good to have local knowledge, I guess.

The hike itself was a bit pedestrian (high five!). It was a rails to trails type of thing, so more of a walk than a hike, but it was along the water, so it at least had nice views.

We are gearing up for Halloween here. We have several pumpkins, and a box of sinful, mass produced, zero nutritional value candy. Our understanding is that there are a few kids in the area who will make the rounds. Even though there are are few cases of covid here, one can't be too careful. My plan is to chuck the candy at them from a safe distance. "Happy Halloween!"

Whapp!

Photos

I haven't been taking many pics this week, but I got a nice one of the sunrise the other morning. I like how the bird feeder glows in the light.

The next is a mushroom from our yard.

Followed by seaweed and lily pads from recent hikes.

No fool like an old fool!!!

Instead of boulverser, I would have used the word bardasser. Not sure it's even a correct word but would convey the situation in more descriptive term; as in you got tossed around a fair bit.
